What is the Neurosurgery Service?

The Neurosurgery Service is staffed by four consultant neurosurgeons, three neurosurgical registrars, two junior medical officers, two office secretaries and a Clinical Nurse Consultant, all supported by a dedicated and caring team of nursing and operating room staff.

Our 500-bed teaching hospital offers an around-the-clock neurosurgical Service that utilises state-of-the-art technologies and provides exceptional care to all neurosurgical patients. The Neurosurgery Service is part of a multidisciplinary Service with many sister specialties ranging from neurology and radiology through to rehabilitation, critical care, oncology and pathology. The hospital has a large and well-equipped general intensive- and high-dependency care unit (ICU/HDU) and a dedicated neurosurgical ward that includes a 6-bed neurosurgical acute care unit (NACU).

Hundreds of neurosurgical operations are carried out every year by the neurosurgeons at this hospital. Neurosurgical operations include neurovascular surgery (brain aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, cavernoma, brain bypass, microvascular decompression, etc.), brain tumour surgery (meningioma, astrocytoma/glioma/GBM, pituitary surgery, acoustic neuroma/vestibular schwannoma, etc.), complex spinal surgery (for degenerative spine disease and spinal trauma, using the latest in spinal instrumentation technology) and surgery for traumatic head injuries.

Neurosurgery academic activities include the teaching of medical students, the supervision of Masters of Surgery candidates, the training of junior medical officers and neurosurgical registrars, in addition to weekly educational multi-Unit conferences in neurosurgery, neurology, neuropathology and neuroradiology, and clinical research projects (click the "Education & Research" tab in the green banner at the top of this page for more details).

Our hospital's medical school is part of the Australian National University (ANU). The ANU has recently been ranked as the number-one University in Australia and one of the top-twenty Universities world-wide.

Do you need private health insurance to be operated by Dr Khurana?

No. Dr Khurana's patients have the choice of being admitted as "Private" or "Public" patients. Private patients from anywhere in Australia should feel free to ask about a "no-gap" option (no out-of-pocket expenses when patients are admitted under Dr Khurana as a private patient). The insurance status of a patient is not as important to Dr Khurana as the patient's well being and satisfaction. In the words of Charles Mayo, one of the founders of the world-famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota USA where Dr Khurana was for nine years, "the best interest of the patient is the only interest to be considered."

Can a person with a brain tumour or a brain vascular condition (such as aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation or cavernoma) travel interstate by ground or air to Dr Khurana?

Yes, as long as the person is neurologically stable and cleared for travel by his or her local doctor, there is nothing stopping him or her from travelling by ground or air to Dr Khurana for a neurosurgical opinion or active care. In fact, while most of Dr Khurana's patients are from the ACT and SE NSW, many of his patients have travelled from across Australia, including Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Northern NSW and North Queensland, for neurosurgical consultation/2nd opinion and treatment.

  • If there are any questions or concerns about travel, Dr Khurana can be reached through the Consultation & Appointment page of this Website (click the link at the top of this page). For information regarding private review of imaging by Dr Khurana, patients should contact Dr Khurana's Office on + 61 2 6244 3937 prior to sending any films/CD-ROMs.

Why should a patient consider a neurosurgical opinion and care by Dr Khurana?

In complex neurosurgery, training, technology and teamwork make a real difference. Dr Khurana, who neurosurgically trained between 1996-2006 at two of the best neurosurgical centres in the United States of America, specialises in the surgical treatment of a wide variety of brain conditions, including those considered to be "high-risk" ( for more information).

  • Dr Khurana and team were awarded the 2007 Australian Capital Territory Quality in Health Care Award for Patient Safety.
  • A multi-million dollar world class neurosurgical operating suite with Australia's first mobile intraoperative MRI is currently being built at our Hospital. to view the official announcement (4.7Mb video).
